Spring Is in the Air, and We Are Getting Ready for You

Stockholm Pie and General Store | Stockholm, Wisconsin

Every spring, something shifts. The ice on Lake Pepin starts to pull back, the first brave tourists start rolling down the Great River Road, and here at the pie shop, we begin the beautiful, slightly chaotic business of getting ready for the season ahead.

If you have been with us for a while, you already know what that means. If you are new here, welcome. Pull up a chair. Let me tell you a little bit about this place.

Stockholm, Wisconsin: Small Town, Big Heart

Stockholm, Wisconsin, sits right along the banks of Lake Pepin, a wide and stunning stretch of the Mississippi River on the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The village itself has a population of just under 80 people, which means that on a quiet Monday in March, you might have the whole street to yourself. Come back on a Saturday in July, and it's a different story entirely.

People find their way to Stockholm by all kinds of roads. Some come down from the Twin Cities, just about ninety minutes away, looking for a weekend escape. Others are making their way along the Great River Road National Scenic Byway, following Highway 35 through some of the most beautiful river country the Midwest has to offer. Still others have been coming since before we opened, because this little village on the Wisconsin side of the river has a way of getting into people's hearts.

There are art galleries here, and gourmet shops, and places that feel like they belong to another, quieter time. The light off the lake in the morning is the kind of thing you don't forget. And right in the middle of it all is our little pie shop.

A Little History, In Case You Are New

I am often asked how the pie company got its start. I must confess that opening a pie shop was not something any of us had planned. In 2006, Alen's sister, Janet, aka “her Pienesss” came to Stockholm to visit Alan & Steve’s art gallery, Abode, which is right next door to where we are today. Janet agreed with something people say about this place, "Come for the weekend, go home with a house," and she decided to stay.

Later on, Janet made a pan of apple dumplings and invited Alan and Steve over for supper. With each bite, they kept saying, "This is fantastic," and "You could sell these."

An idea was planted.

In May 2008, we opened the doors to Stockholm Pie and General Store with the notion that some people might enjoy a slice of honest, handmade pie. We had no idea what was coming. We have been humbled and delighted ever since.

What We Make, and How We Make It

Everything that comes out of this kitchen is made by hand, from scratch, with the freshest ingredients we can find. No commercial pie dough. No pre-made fillings. Every crust is handmade, every pie is assembled the way it should be. The slow way, the right way.

We carry somewhere around twenty four varieties at any given time: fruit pies, cream pies, pecan, and old-fashioned classics like sour cream raisin that bring back memories of pies grandma used to make. We are always developing something new, too, because if there is one thing the pie world never runs out of, it is ideas.

Pies are available as full ten-inch pies,Six-inch pies, and pie cookies, a wonderful way to try something you have never had before. Special orders are always welcome. If you want a pie that isn't on the menu, we just might be able to make it.

The General Store side of the shop carries nostalgic toys, candies, local goods, artisan products, and the kinds of finds that make people want to linger and laugh. The Martketplace is filled with the true tastes of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Treats, mixes, jams & jellies, foodstuffs, wine, spirits and cheese…it is Wisconsin after all. We love these parts of things just as much as the pie.

We Are Getting Ready: New Faces, Fresh Energy

Every spring, getting ready for the busy season is a project in the best possible way. There are orders to plan, ingredients to source, menus to think through, and a whole lot of prep work that happens before the first busy weekend arrives.

This year, we are welcoming new staff to the team, and we couldn't be more excited about that. Bringing someone new into the kitchen means taking the time to pass along not just the recipes, but the care that goes into every single thing we make. That matters to us. It has always mattered to us. The pie is only as good as the person making it, and we take that seriously.

To our new team members: welcome to Stockholm. You are going to love it here.

Can't Make the Trip? We Ship.

One of the questions we get most often, whether from a customer standing at the counter or someone reaching out from across the country, is some version of: "Is there any way to get your pie where I live?"

There is.

We ship our pies nationwide through Goldbelly, which is the best way to get a real, handcrafted pie from a small shop like ours delivered right to your door. If you have never ordered from Goldbelly before, it is straightforward: you visit our page on their site, choose your pies, select your delivery date, and check out. The pies ship frozen and arrive ready for you to have  at home, with easy instructions included.

It is, if we do say so, a wonderful way to send a gift, or to simply treat yourself when the craving strikes and Stockholm is a few hundred miles away.

πŸ‘‰ Order Stockholm Pie on Goldbelly

We have shipped to customers all over the country, and there is something that never gets old about hearing that a pie made in a Seventy Eight person village in Wisconsin made someone's birthday, or holiday, or Tuesday a little bit better.

Pre-Order for Pickup: The Smart Move for Busy Season

If you are planning to visit us in Stockholm, or at one of our other locations, we always encourage pre-ordering, especially once the summer season gets rolling. A pre-order means your pie is ready and waiting when you arrive, and you won't have to worry about a sellout on a busy Saturday.

You can pre-order for pickup at:

  • πŸ“ Stockholm, WI, our original home, right on Spring Street

  • πŸ“ Red Wing, MN, Pie Plate Café, just across the river

  • πŸ“ River Falls, WI, That Girl Brie, a wonderful newer location with its own loyal following, a must visit!

Holidays and peak summer weekends fill up faster than you'd expect. Don't wait until the last minute.

Come See Us This Season

We are almost there. The kitchen is warming back up, new pies are being developed for the season ahead, and the village of Stockholm is getting ready to welcome everyone who makes the trip down the river road.

If you have never been, this is the year. Come for the drive along Lake Pepin, stay for the art galleries and the quiet beauty of this little place, and sit down with a slice of something that I promise you will be glad you tried.

If you have been before, we cannot wait to see you again.

Either way, there is a slice here with your name on it.
